Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail

It is always difficult for one generation to appreciate the struggles faced by another. Today, the commonwealth of Virginia guarantees 12 years of education to any child, regardless of his or her gender or race. No child currently attending Virginia schools can remember a time when only the sons of privileged land and business owners were allowed to attend school. They don’t remember a time when the “separate but equal” doctrine segregated African American and white students, and today’s students have to be reminded of a time when women had very few opportunities in higher education.
